Embedded engineering & consultancy

We get to the root of your embedded problems.

Firmware that crashes in the field. An architecture that won't scale to the next product. A deadline that's closer than the finish line. Squarrot helps hardware teams design, debug and ship reliable embedded systems — with direct, engineer-to-engineer advice.

Services

Embedded expertise, exactly where you need it

From a single architecture review to hands-on firmware work. Pick what fits — we'll tell you honestly if you don't need us.

🧭

Embedded advice & architecture

Choosing an MCU, an RTOS or a connectivity stack is a decision you'll live with for years. We help you make it with confidence: requirements, trade-offs, a clear architecture and a roadmap your team can execute.

  • MCU, RTOS & toolchain selection
  • Firmware architecture & module design
  • Technical second opinion before you commit
🔍

Code & design reviews

A fresh pair of expert eyes on your firmware. You get a clear report with prioritised findings — reliability, safety, memory, timing and maintainability.

🐞

Debugging & rescue

Random resets, hard faults, race conditions, that one bug that only shows up on Tuesdays. We dig in with the debugger and the scope until it's found and fixed.

⚙️

Firmware development

Drivers, BSPs, RTOS applications, bootloaders and OTA updates. Clean, tested and documented C/C++ that your team can maintain after we're gone.

🔌

Hardware bring-up

First boards on the bench? We get peripherals talking, validate your design and feed findings back to the hardware team before the next spin.

📡

Connectivity & IoT

BLE, Wi-Fi, CAN, Modbus, MQTT and friends. Robust communication between your device, your gateway and your cloud.

🔋

Low-power optimisation

Battery life measured in weeks instead of years? We profile, tune sleep modes and rethink duty cycles until the numbers add up.

🧪

Testing & firmware CI

Unit tests on the host, hardware-in-the-loop, automated builds. So every release is less exciting — in the best possible way.

Why Squarrot

Small on purpose. Serious about engineering.

No sales team, no layers of project managers. When you work with Squarrot, you talk directly to the engineer who does the work.

01

Engineer to engineer

You explain the problem once, to the person solving it. No translation layers, no lost context.

02

Fast to start

A small team means short lines. We can usually start within days, not months.

03

Honest advice

If an off-the-shelf module does the job, we'll tell you. We'd rather save you money than bill you hours.

04

No lock-in

You own every line of code and every document. Everything is handed over so your team can carry on without us.

05

Clear scope, clear price

Fixed-scope proposals where possible, so you know what you get and what it costs before we start.

06

Built to last

Readable code, sensible architecture and documentation that is actually useful. Firmware that survives its second year.

How we work

From first call to working firmware

  1. 1

    Intro call

A free, no-strings 30-minute call. You tell us what's going on; we tell you honestly whether and how we can help.

  2. 2

    Deep dive

Under NDA, we look at your requirements, schematics or code to understand the real problem — not just the symptoms.

  3. 3

    Proposal

A concrete plan with scope, deliverables, timeline and price. No surprises.

  4. 4

    Build & advise

We get to work, with short feedback loops and regular demos on real hardware.

  5. 5

    Handover

Code, documentation and a walkthrough for your team. Optional support afterwards.

Advice sprint

1 – 5 days

Architecture review, code audit or a technical second opinion. Ends with a clear written report and recommendations.

Most common

Project

Fixed scope

A well-defined piece of work — a driver, a bootloader, a bring-up, a bug hunt — delivered end to end.

Embedded partner

Ongoing

A set number of days per month. Your on-call embedded expert for questions, reviews and development.

The Squarrot mascot: a square carrot with a square-root symbol

About

Why a square carrot?

Because we like getting to the root of things — and because engineering doesn't have to be boring. Squarrot is a young, independent embedded consultancy from the Netherlands, founded by an embedded engineer who enjoys nothing more than a tricky problem, a logic analyser and a cup of coffee.

We work with start-ups building their first connected product, and with established companies that need extra embedded expertise for a while. Remote wherever it makes sense, on-site whenever the hardware asks for it.

Serious engineering. Slightly silly name.

FAQ

Good questions

Is my project too small for you?

Probably not. A one-day code review or a single tricky bug is a perfectly good reason to get in touch.

Do you sign an NDA?

Yes, happily — before you share any details about your product.

Do you work remotely or on-site?

Both. Most advice and development works fine remotely. For bring-up and hardware debugging we're happy to come by, or you can ship us a board.

Who owns the code you write?

You do. All source code, documentation and intellectual property created for your project are yours.

Can you work alongside our existing team?

Absolutely — that's often the best setup. We slot into your repo, your tools and your way of working.

What does it cost?

It depends on the scope. After the free intro call you'll get a clear proposal with a fixed price or a day rate, so you always know where you stand.
